There is this age long argument about religion and government being control tools; used to regulate the behavior of humans. But this write-up is not to further that debate, rather I want to attempt to establish a relationship between humanity, government, and religion. Yes it might seem like religion and government are fashioned by man to control man, but there is no denying the fact that both play a very crucial role in human existence.
If you look at life generally, you will discover that everything follows a definite pattern. The seasons, day/night, hot/cold, gravity, motion, life, death, etc, they all follow a pattern. This means that control/leadership is as natural as air. Let’s take a look at nature; there are laws and constants that guides nature. When it’s day time darkness flees, and when it is raining the sun withdraws temporarily. So you see even inanimate objects follow rules.
Now let’s look at the animal kingdom; in the animal kingdom there is hierarchy, rank, seniority, and leadership. Take lions for instance; lions have hierarchy when it comes to feeding, mating, and control of territories. The oldest and strongest male is usually in control of the pride, and all lions in that pride must respect the leader. Even though it is a known fact that it is the female lions that does majority of the kills, they must wait for the alpha lion to feed first before the other pride members can feed.
Even the monkeys as well as other animals have ranks and those at the top get all the choicest food, females, and territories. So humans are no exception when it comes to comes to control/leadership. But in the case of humans, leadership/control is well structured. There are written and spoken laws that guide our conducts as humans.
Humans unlike other animals created various institutions that seeks to model and regulate the activities of mankind.
Because of the need for control and leadership, humans established institutions such as; marriage, religious institutions, educational institutions, military institutions, government, monarchy, etc.
Now it is not entirely out of place to liken all these institutions to control tools, but we all must agree that for humans to remain the kings of this world, these institutions all have a vital role to play. Control is a natural thing, and without it, there will be chaos, anarchy, immorality, war, disorderliness, civil disobedience, etc. In short without rules and regulations, humans will be no better than the other lower animals.
So, whether religion and government are control tools or not, humans need control for the world to remain sane. Even with so many rules and regulations in place, we still find rapists in every corner, terrorists who will stop at nothing to destroy the world, thieves, murderers, etc. Now imagine there were no laws at all, this world would have been over by now; because some humans are nothing but bad news, and they wouldn’t mind nuking the earth for fun. That’s how bad it can get if control/leadership is lacking in this world.
Government helps to instill fear and discipline in humans, while religion inculcates values, morality, and humanity in humans. Without them, there is no telling what would have become of this world.
